Board and mat sizes vary widely depending on the game. Common sizes range from small player mats around 8" x 5" (203 x 127mm) to large game boards of 18" x 18" (457 x 457mm) or larger. Folding boards are typically produced in halves or quarters.

When preparing files for professional printing, two critical areas extend beyond the visible card face:
The bleed is an extra 0.125" (3.175mm) of artwork that extends beyond the trim line on each side. During manufacturing, sheets are cut slightly imprecisely. The bleed ensures there are no white edges if the cut is off by a fraction of a millimeter. Your background colors and artwork should extend all the way into the bleed area.
The safe zone is the area at least 0.125" (3.175mm) inside the trim line on each side. Important content: text, icons, card titles, and game mechanics, should stay within the safe zone. Anything outside it risks being cut off or appearing uncomfortably close to the card edge.
The total file size for a printed component equals the card size plus bleed on all four sides. For example, a poker card (2.5" x 3.5") with standard bleed becomes 2.75" x 3.75" for the final exported image.
Tip: In the editor, toggle the bleed overlay with the B key and the safe zone with the S key to see these areas while you design. This helps you position important content correctly before exporting.
