Dice Designer
Custom dice are the part of a prototype people pick up first. The Dice Designer gives you dedicated controls for designing them. When your card size is a die, a grid of faces replaces the flat card. You style every face at once, choose how values are displayed (dots, numbers, or icons), and open any single face to design it on its own.
Accessing the Dice Designer
The Dice Designer opens when your card size is a die. Chitmunk has three custom full-color dice, a D4, a D6, and a D8. To use one:
- Open the game menu (the arrow beside your game's name at the top) and choose Card size.
- Open the Dice group and pick Custom Full Color D4, D6, or D8.
- The card is replaced by a grid with one tile for each face of the die.
- Click a tile to select that face. Double-click it to edit that face in full on the main canvas, then use Previous face and Next face (or the face buttons) to move around. The back button returns you to the grid.
Tip: Each die size comes with the correct finished size and edge for TheGameCrafter's custom dice. Check TheGameCrafter's product page for the exact finished size.
Style for Every Face
The bar under the grid changes every face at once:
- Dot color: the color of the dots or numbers.
- Die color: the die's own background.
- Edge color: the color that shows past the die's edge before trimming.
- Outline color: the line around the die.
- Corner roundness: from square to rounded.
- Face style: Dots, Number, Small icons (icons arranged like dots), or Single icon.
When you choose Small icons or Single icon, two buttons appear: Use one icon for all faces and Set a different icon per face…. The second opens a window with a Choose button for each face, and Apply to All saves them. Icons come from the same library as Clip art.
Dots
The classic dot layout, placed exactly for each face value. Dots only work on six-sided dice. On a D4 or D8, use Number or an icon style.
Number
Shows the face value as a numeral. It works on every die. Pick the font and size in the face's settings.
Icons
Replaces the number with an icon, which is useful for symbol dice such as action, element, or event dice.
Tip: A face style applies to every face when you pick it, but you can still open a single face afterward and change just that one. A custom D6 might use dots on faces 1 to 3, a skull on face 4, and numbers on faces 5 and 6.
Shared Elements
Under the style bar, + Background, + Shape, and + Text add an element to every face at once. Edit one and it updates everywhere, which suits a border or a corner mark that should match on all faces.
Per-Face Design
Each face is its own design. In the full editor for a face you can add anything from the Add panel: backgrounds, text, shapes, images, and game parts. The dots, number, or icon is one element among the others, so you can layer flavor text or a decorative border over it.
Common per-face patterns:
- Themed backgrounds: a different background color per face.
- Flavor icons: small corner icons showing the face's effect.
- Action text: a short label such as "Attack", "Defend", or "Miss".
- Frame elements: a consistent border across all faces.
3D Preview
Press 3D Preview at the top of the designer to see the die as a rough 3D model. Drag to rotate and scroll to zoom. It is a mockup, so always check your print service's official proof before ordering.
Spreadsheet Data and Dice
The dot, number, or icon itself cannot be linked to a spreadsheet column. If you want data-driven values on a face, add a regular text or image element on top and link it to a column with {{Column Name}}, the same way as on any card.
Tips for Custom Dice Designs
- Keep dots large enough to read at 16mm. A standard D6 is about 16mm (0.63"), so dots should be at least 2mm across.
- Use high contrast. Dark dots on a light face, or the reverse. Avoid colored dots on a similar background.
- Test icons small. Zoom out to 25% to see how an icon will look on a physical face. Detailed icons lose clarity.
- Need a dice face on a regular card? The Dice face game part (from Score track, grids, QR… in the Add panel) draws a single face as an illustration. It also offers D10, D12, and D20, which are not available as printable dice.
