Version History
The version from last Tuesday was better, and now you can prove it. Chitmunk keeps versions of your game in this browser as you work, so you can go back to an earlier state. Version history lists them, newest first. Restoring makes a new version, so nothing is lost.
Automatic Versions
Chitmunk adds a version on its own in three situations:
- Session start: When you open the editor, so you have a clean restore point before any edits.
- Every 10 minutes: While you are actively editing. If you have not touched anything for a minute, it waits until you do.
- Before risky actions: Loading a starter template, restoring a version, or deleting a deck saves your current state first. These show as Safety copy.
Tip: After each version the save status in the bottom bar reads "Saved to this browser".
Labeled Versions
Press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on macOS) to save and add a version called "Manual save". To make it easy to find later, open Version history, click Rename on it, and give it a name such as "After adding card backs" or "v2 layout". Labeled versions are never removed automatically. Make one before a big layout change or before trying a new style.
Restoring a Previous Version
- Open the Game menu in the band at the top and choose Version history. In the editor it opens as a drawer; on Game Home it opens as a page.
- Use the filters (All, Labeled, Automatic, Safety) to narrow the list. Each entry shows its name, when it was saved, and what kind it is.
- Click Compare with now to see what changed.
- Click Restore and confirm. Your current work is saved as a version first, so you can always come back.
Note: Restoring replaces your whole game, including every deck, spreadsheet, icon, and asset. The safety copy keeps the version you left.
You can also Delete a version you no longer need.
Where Versions Live
Versions are stored in this browser, on this device. They are not copied to other browsers or computers. To move a game, or to keep a backup, use Download as file below. For where a game itself is saved and how to share it, see Chitmunk Cloud and collaboration.
Download and Open a File
For a backup or to hand a game to someone else, open the Game menu and choose Download as file. It saves your game as a file. To load one, choose Open a file in the same menu and pick a .json or .zip file saved from Chitmunk.
How Many Versions Are Kept?
Chitmunk keeps up to 100 versions in this browser. When the limit is reached, the oldest automatic versions are removed first. Labeled versions, session starts, and safety copies are kept until you delete them.
