What Is a Token Sheet?

A token sheet is a printed page of small, identical game pieces arranged in a grid and designed to be punched out or cut apart. If you have ever opened a board game box and popped cardboard chits from a perforated sheet, you have held a token sheet. They are one of the most common components in tabletop gaming, used for everything from resource counters and status markers to victory point tokens and player-owned currency.

Token sheets look simple, but laying one out manually is surprisingly painful. Each token needs precise placement so that the cut guides line up, the bleed zones extend far enough for the die cutter, and the spacing accounts for the kerf of the cutting tool. Mess up the alignment by a fraction of a millimeter and your entire sheet is off, leaving you with lopsided tokens that do not stack cleanly or fit their storage compartment.

How Chitmunk's Token Sheet Generator Works

Chitmunk's token sheet generator automates the tedious parts. You configure a handful of options and the generator builds a perfectly aligned sheet instantly:

Every change updates the preview in real time. Click Apply and the token sheet lands on your canvas as a single element. Layer other elements on top, bind token labels to a CSV spreadsheet to generate unique tokens in bulk, or simply export the blank sheet for hand-drawing during a playtest.

Who Is This For?

Board game designers prototyping chits and counters. Need 30 resource tokens for a playtest next weekend? Generate a token sheet, drop in your resource icons, export a PNG, and print it at home. Iterate between sessions without rebuilding the layout from scratch.

Print-on-demand publishers. Token sheets for TheGameCrafter and other manufacturers require precise cut guides and bleed zones. The generator produces layouts that meet print specifications out of the box, saving you the trial-and-error of manual placement in a generic design tool.

Tabletop RPG game masters. Custom status tokens, condition markers, and initiative trackers are easy to produce. Generate a sheet of circular tokens, label each one with a condition name, print, laminate, and cut.

Card game designers who need coin or resource tokens. Many card games ship with a small sheet of punchout tokens for scoring or currency. The generator handles the layout so you can focus on the artwork.

Token Sheets vs. Placing Shapes Manually

In a generic design tool, building a token sheet means creating one shape, duplicating it across a grid, manually spacing every row and column, adding cut guides as separate line elements, and hoping everything stays aligned when you resize the artboard. Change the token count or switch from circles to hexagons? Start over.

With Chitmunk, you change a dropdown and the entire sheet reconfigures. Switch from a 3×3 circle layout to a 4×5 hexagon grid in two clicks. The cut guides, bleed zones, and spacing all update automatically. Resize the element on the canvas and everything scales proportionally.

Pair the token sheet with CSV data binding and you can generate a unique label, number, or icon on each token automatically. One template, one spreadsheet, dozens of unique tokens.
